Balancing tension with atmosphere, melody with abrasiveness, 'Dystopian Hellhole' reflected a world that was teetering on uncertainty then, and has sunk far deeper into the abyss since. Nearly a decade on, the album’s stark, uneasy mood feels undiminished and the titular question it poses remains more apt than it's ever been.

Looking back on the record, Dyer says: "Ten years ago I was starting the writing process for what would become ‘What Kind Of Dystopian Hellhole Is This?’ We’d just moved to Berlin and David Bowie had passed away, come the end of the year we’d had the Brexit vote and Donald Trump was elected President of the US. It was an uncertain time and the songs that we recorded in Leo’s basement studio that summer were soaked in the fear and anger that accompanied the politics of 2016. They also happened to be beautifully layered and catchy songs that perfectly encapsulated what I wanted my band to represent. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principle that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product, Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe it's a terrible mistake, maybe its better this way” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. Portuguese trio 10,000 Russos are best known for conjuring up concrete slabs of kosmische psych-rock and now, having teamed up with RMFTM, their repetitive droning mantras have manifested into a whole new beast – the looped, motorik chants feeding perfectly off RMFTM’s throbbing free-form jams.

Free from any sort of structure or direction, the result is an intense, jarring collection of deranged industrial freak-outs that make Einstürzende Neubauten sound like Depeche Mode. Painting a dreary image of barren, polluted landscapes in the dystopia we seem so desperate to hurtle towards, on this record RMFTM and 10,000 Russos have carved out a terrifying, cerebral soundtrack for the end of times whilst simultaneously asserting, once again, that both bands are some of the finest within the dark, murky underbelly of experimental music. From the pulverising guitars, primal percussion and hissing synths, through to droning Tibetan bowls and buried vocal chants, the album jerks between intense metallic fury and psychedelic hypnosis.

Recorded at Super-Nova Studios with Bob De Wit (Gnod, A Place To Bury Strangers) - whom the bands credit as being the third, equally-important component of the record – the album is just as much of a product of their improvisational approach as it is inspired by avant-garde literature. Whilst Russos vocalist João recites lyrics that are taken from a collection of short stories by Honore De Balzac, one of the forebears of the realism literary movement, they explain the actual writing and production process itself was also indebted to the cut-up techniques of the Beat generation. Talking about the collaboration, Glenn Peeters (RMFTM) explains: “The plan was to create something meaningful in one day. The album started out as improvisations but we didn’t want it to be just a collection of jams, so we went back and pieced all the improv parts together to shape them into something else entirely - using a similar cut-up approach to that of William S. One that journeys from shoegaze-drones that weigh heavy on your chest (“Oval Strii”, “Monochrome Continuum”), to kosmische psychedelic pop (“Waters”) and dub-inflected post-punk (“Ferris Noir”) that falls somewhere between Metal Box-era PiL and the shimmering, textural guitars of The Durutti Column. Vonal-Axis, due for release November 30th, is the bands finest work yet - their latest in a very lengthy career that’s seen them remain a mysterious presence on the fringes of the experimental French underground since forming the project back in 1997.

Emerging out of Rouen, a small city in the Normandy region of France, the four-piece arrived with their now impossible-to-find debut album, The Importance Of Being Steeple Remove (1998) - released on the cult label Sordide Sentimental who put out earlier works from the likes of Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. After that they all but disappeared, not returning until eight years later with Radio Silence (2006) and Electric Suite (2008), both marking a departure from their early experimental electronica into a wider pool of kraut, psychedelic rock and atmospheric pop. Save for the odd single and live show, it took another six years to hear a full record from the band – that being the 2014 LP Position Normal which left them to pick up glowing, long-overdue praise across Europe. Choosing not to leave it quite so long this time, enter Vonal-Axis: a nine-track LP that sees them attempt to hone in on their near quarter-century of experimentation to produce a collection of tracks that are sometimes poppy, sometimes heavy, but always exploratory.

The album was recorded by the band themselves on an old 8-track recorder, taking half-written songs into the studio and then improvising on top of them to maintain the energy the songs had when played live. Among the long list of other bands Steeple Remove have shared the stage with is krautrock leviathans Faust and Damo Suzuki, London punk-rockers Wire and D.C. stoner rock troupe Dead Meadow - offering a pretty clear insight into the many sonic worlds Steeple Remove have journeyed into and found a home through the years.

Steeple Remove is Arno Van Colen (Vocals/Synths), Walter Thomas (Percussion), Mana Audisio (Guitars) and David B (Bass).

Available on 180g coloured vinyl, limited to 300 copies.

Tracklist: 1) Oval-Strii 2) Blood Veins 3) Ferris Noir 4) Set It 5) In Dreams 6) Monochrome Continuum 7) In The Waves 8) Waters 9) Pink Ferris

Receive our monthly Fuzz Club Membership package and 10% off on all other orders and Fuzz Club events. The package will contain the most deluxe version of a new album release from that month. Recorded live at Love Buzz Productions and pressed to 180gm vinyl, Lumerians’ Fuzz Club Session LP – due for release January 29th – is comprised of four tracks, new and old. 'Longwave' and 'Corkscrew Trepanation' are lifted from the band's 2011 Partisan Records-released 'Transmalinna' LP and their 2008 self-titled debut EP, respectively. On this record, though, we hear the songs take on a whole new life: "Both of these songs had mutated into different animals over the years and were frequently played together as a finale during our live shows. We wanted to document their transformation since we really liked what they had become", the band reflect.

As well as those reimagined Lumerians cuts, the Fuzz Club Session also features two previously unreleased jams. They describe 'Light The Beacon' as "a snapshot of a piece of music we had been using to open our shows for tours in 2018 and 2019. It started as a simple oscillator drone that would lead into the first song but eventually became a song in and of itself. The song never really had a name, but since we used it as a way to signal the show was beginning and draw people towards the stage, 'Light the Beacon' seemed appropriate for this version." 'Transmission Overture', on the other hand, was a spontaneous composition that they'd never played before and haven't since: "This is basically the process by which we wrote all of our songs. We'd record our improvisations, listen back and then select the parts that stood out most and learn how to play it again. The choir is now absent and Wehner’s own voice assumes a more central, hypnotic stance. Originally released on 11/11/11 via Anton Newcombe’s A Recordings label, ‘Dead Magick’ has come to be seen as one of this generation’s definitive neo-psychedelic works and had an almost cult-like reverence attached to it. Tours around the UK, EU and USA, major international festival dates and critical acclaim soon followed the album’s release, and it also helped to catalyse a burgeoning underground psych scene to whom ‘Dead Magick’s occult sonic belligerence became a crucial and highly-lauded touchstone. A twelve-track masterclass in “transportative far-out guitar hymnals” (The Quietus) and "a psychedelic battle cry" (The Guardian), the ‘Dead Magick’ double album was an exercise in spiritual rock’n’roll drones shaped by primitive fuzzed-out guitars, repetitive vocal mantras, distorted organs and crashing percussion.

Inspired by bandleader Jón Sæmundur Auðarson’s diagnosis with HIV, the driving philosophy behind Dead Skeletons (and the wider ‘DEAD’ concept that Jón, aka Nonni Dead, has been exploring since 2003) is defined by the ‘He who fears death cannot enjoy life’ chant heard on the album’s declarative opening track, ‘Dead Mantra’. The underground hit was the first song released by Dead Skeletons – comprising Jón, Henrik Björnsonn (Singapore Sling), Ryan Carlson and Aislinn Van Kriedt (Asteroid #4) – and laid out the band’s intentions from the off: to use music as a means to inspire people to celebrate and cherish life unshackled from fears and anxieties over their mortality. “I created the DEAD concept in 2003 as an idea to use art as a therapy to overcome the fear of death and to enjoy life to the fullest. I had been dealing with the HIV virus since 1994 and wanted to use my art skills to explore this idea further and spread positive messages to help other people in the same position as myself”, the Reykjavik-based artist recalls.

Third pressing on 140g clear red vinyl out now. Dealing in a hypnotic blend of neo-psychedelia, post-punk and new wave, The Third Sound is a Berlin-based band led by the Icelandic musician Hákon Aðalsteinsson, who is the guitarist in Brian Jonestown Massacre and formerly played in the cult rock’n’roll outfit Singapore Sling. A mainstay of the European psych underground in his own right, not just through his collaborations with the likes of Anton Newcombe and Tess Parks, The Third Sound has been Hakon’s primary solo endeavour since the release of his self-titled debut on Newcombe’s A Recordings a decade ago.

Arriving following 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’ LP, ‘First Light’ marks an evolution into a brighter and at times uplifting sound. Marrying moments of light and dark, the result is The Third Sound’s most dynamic full-length to date. Talking about the album, Hakon said: “This album is definitely less gloomy than the previous one, although some ghosts from the past are lurking in the background. We always try to make something new on each album and never make the same album over again, but this feels like an even bigger change than usual, especially regarding the mood. Something new is beginning although the past is not forgotten. I think the title, First Light, describes the overall feel of the record pretty well.”

‘First Light’ is the fifth full-length from The Third Sound and arrives off the back of 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’, 2016’s ‘Gospels of Degeneration’, 2013’s ‘The Third Sound of Destruction and Creation’ and their 2011 self-titled debut. With Hakon Aðalsteinsson leading the group on vocals and guitar, the rest of the band is currently comprised of Robin Hughes (Guitar / Organ), Fred Sunesen (Drums) and Andreas Miranda (Bass). With a number of European tours in tow, the band have previously shared the stage with the likes of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Warlocks, Singapore Sling, Crocodiles, Clinic, Tess Parks and more.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0892/6734/products/TheThirdSound-FirstLight-Packshot_fdcd621d-38fb-4572-8906-d0e032a16d8b.jpg?v=1637142336
ashinoa-loree
Ashinoa - L'Orée

Second album from French experimental group Ashinoa is out now on 180g ultra-clear vinyl in a hand-numbered gatefold sleeve. At times percussive and dancey, at others hypnotic and cinematic, the largely synthesiser-driven soundscapes of 'L’Orée' feel both of the past and the future. It’s the sound of two different worlds – a record capable of being as primal and ritualistic as it is synthesised and digitally manipulated. Where the band’s prior minimal Krautrock (see their 2019 ‘Sinie Sinie’ LP) might have brought to mind cold, dark post-industrial cities, ‘L’Orée’s kosmische experimentalism takes you instead on an instrumental journey through the natural wilderness via the medium of shape-shifting psychedelic electronics.

That ‘L’Orée’ explores a more natural and organic sound than heard on their previous releases owes largely to the environment it was made in. Recorded in a tucked-away house in the French countryside that bordered on a surrounding forest, Ashinoa recall sessions spent soaking up their surroundings with a number of collaborators coming in and out to perform on the record: “The house we recorded the album in was kind of in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by douglas pine trees. From this proximity to the forest, we wanted to take our soundscapes to a place we’ve never been before. Before we were surrounded by concrete, and then far from it. We were looking for a new listening place, to discover new intriguing sounds. We had laid down the basis of the album and then musician friends that would visit us at the time were invited to participate in the making of the album, each one of them bringing a touch of their own.”

Since forming in 2015, the French five-piece comprised of Chris Poincelot, Matteo Fabbri, Jérémy Labarre, Paul Renard and Ghazi Frini have been at the forefront of the alternative scene in their home city of Lyon. Initially associated with the city’s Misère Records movement and collective, the band have now signed to London-based label Fuzz Club Records (Night Beats, Tess Parks, The Underground Youth) for their latest. It follows the band's debut 'Sinie Sinie' LP and a vinyl-only release of the 'Koalibi' single as part of Fuzz Club's Reverb Conspiracy compilation series. Having toured around France on a number of occasions Ashinoa have also through the years shared stages with the likes of Metz, Flamingods, Tomaga, Warmduscher, Bo Ningen, Kikagaku Moyo, Minami Deutsch, The Holydrug Couple and many more.

Originally released in 2017 on the band’s own label Artificial Plastic and now being reissued by Fuzz Club Records, ‘Damage And Joy’ is the seventh studio album from Scottish alt-rock legends The Jesus and Mary Chain.
