Following 2022's 'Beware Believers' and their 2019 debut 'Silver Tongues', 'Reason Enough' lands September 27th 2024 via Bad Vibrations \/ Fuzz Club.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the occasion, James Cox (vocals), Steve Goddard (guitar), Jith Amarasinghe (bass) and Sam Lister (drums), swapped their usual rehearsal space, a small studio in Homerton, East London, for the cavernous walls of a “weird little studio” – as Goddard puts it – in Stroud, Gloucestershire. More specifically, a former Catholic church and convent where the band parked themselves up in the crypt, which was more conducive to inspiring the foundations for ‘Reason Enough’. “Having a more relaxed approach this time around meant we could explore different stuff,” Goddard says. “We don’t want to sound the same as we did before – this is our third album, we have to move on. And so we fucked around a bit more.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArmed with dozens of ideas, they returned to London in a bid to finesse them all alongside Mercury Prize-nominated producer and master of the polished indie record Andy Savours (Black County, New Road, My Bloody Valentine). The result: a concise, 10-track album which goes a long way to show Crows’ sonic versatility. It’s more melodic work than what Crows have previously done, “rather than being all-out punk”, as Goddard puts it. “It feels less lo-fi, cleaner and more well-rounded as a result,” Cox adds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLyrically, Cox drew heavily from a difficult year, both personally and in terms of facing up to a heavygoing news cycle. “I went pretty unhappy with the lyrics and vocals,” he says. “I wanted to moan a bit. Italian multi-instrumentalist Alessio Ferarri’s third Upupuyāma record and first on Fuzz Club finds inspiration in traditional Bhutanese music, Thai disco and Anatolian psych, by way of the lysergic acid-folk, ‘70s kosmische and stoner-rock that has always coursed through the project – dream-like instrumentals always threatening to breakdown into blasts of fuzzed-out riffing.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Mount Elephant was born out of a need to listen, to listen to silence”, Ferrari says: “Listening to the silence while observing flowers, while moving your hands in the wind, listening to your body while you are dancing. If in my first album ('Upupayāma') I had travelled the length and breadth of a place, in the second ('The Golden Pond') I had reached one and stopped there, in this third album I set out again, crossing a border and entering a long-dreamed place that I could finally ‘see with my own eyes’.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA six-piece band live, where things take a more ever-evolving improvisation-based approach, on the recordings Ferrari writes, plays and records everything himself – guitars, keys, flute, sitar, erhu and an arsenal of percussion all feature. The recordings were laid down over time in Ferrari's home barn studio in a small mountain village overlooking the city of Parma, before being mixed by Chris Smith at Kluster Sounds (Kikagaku Moyo, Wax Machine).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Musically speaking, I find it a paradoxical record because, although it uses a lot more fuzz than the previous albums, I find it a more relaxed record with more rhythm. I used a lot more percussion than before – such as congas, bongos, and cowbells – and I use them in a freer, more playful way. I can't stand it when people say ‘it's a more mature record etc’, I don't find any sense in it, it seems like we are on this planet to ripen like apples or tomatoes. On the contrary, I think that Mount Elephant is a much more childish album than the first two and I am very proud of that.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e‘Moon Needs the Wolf’ opens the album with the sort of musical journey that shapes many of the songs on the album, starting out in a soft psych-folk setting stripped back to just acoustic guitar, sitar and flute: “This song came to me one night with the acoustic guitar in the woods, remembering when, during the lockdown, I could hear the wolves howling in the woods near home.” For all that the song starts out on a hushed footing, though, soon a lively, wah-riding motorik groove kicks in that takes the song to almost dancey heights before eventually breaking down in a disorientating clash of blown-out soloing and scattered percussion.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe soaring ‘Thimpu’ was written whilst Ferrare went down a rabbit hole of seeking out obscure traditional Bhutanese music. “I would love to visit Bhutan one day and this song is one way to imagine myself there. ‘Thimpu’ is the mispronounced name of the capital, which would be Thimphu.” Elsewhere ‘Fil Dağı’ (‘Elephant Mountain’ in Turkish) taps into the project’s Anatolian influences, expanding on a song that first appeared on his 2020 debut: “I like to think of this song as a Green Cabana II. I often find myself imagining people dancing to our songs around a fire in the middle of nature and this one makes me think about it the most.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThen there is the sprawling, 10-minute ‘Moon Needs The Owl’, a psychedelic world-disco groove that uplifts in its first half before slowly fading out in a sublime, winding haze as all good parties should: “This song is set in a Thai disco in the 70s with all these people smashing things (I recorded myself smashing empty wine bottles), messing around having fun and laughing, then the night gives way to dawn and everyone walks home.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFollowing the atmospheric interlude ‘Dabadaba’ (“I wanted to play around with the flute and this huge shamanic drum with a sound so low that it makes your stomach vibrate every time you hit it”), the album closes out with title-track ‘Mount Elephant’. A song which perhaps perfectly captures the odyssey-like quality of this record: sublime tranquillity descending into a heads-down wig-out of epic proportions: “The first part of this song is a meditation on this endless mountain called Mount Elephant that cannot be found on any map. Re-establishing Parks as the consummate artist-observer against a swirling nouveau-delic backdrop, her third solo album arrives on October 25th 2024 on Fuzz Club and was produced by multi-instrumentalist and close collaborator Ruari Meehan, who shared mixing duties with Grammy-nominated engineer Mikko Gordon (The Smile, Gaz Coombes, Arcade Fire).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough Tess Parks first became widely known for her string of collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre mastermind Anton Newcombe, her 2022 solo offering And Those Who Were Seen Dancing left an unforgettable impression with its signature blend of weight, whimsy, and open-heartedness. The New York Times would praise its “confident, enchanting presence”, whilst Exclaim! proclaimed it as a record that “demands to be heard and felt”. Where Dancing retained a fair measure of bedroom-demo charm, this time the canvas is bigger, with Meehan’s arrangements stretching all the way to the horizon. This is the most ambitious and cinematic Parks’ music has ever sounded. Drawing on psychedelic elements in a way that sounds decidedly fresh, the dreamlike atmospheres feel oddly nostalgic and modern at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pair are backed on most tracks by band members Francesco ‘Pearz’ Perini  – whose piano and organs shine through gloriously on ‘Koalas’ and ‘California’s Dreaming’ respectively – and Marco Ninni, who provides the solid backbone throughout on drums. From a vocal perspective, it feels like Parks pushes her voice to new heights on this album too. Her lyrics are sharp, ever-present, and imbued with strength, depth, and poetic purpose, which shine particularly bright on tracks like ‘Koalas’ and ‘Charlie Potato’. They weave through her flurries of beautiful melodic hooks, featuring sublime choruses and complex, multi-layered harmonic structures, as showcased on ‘Crown Shy’ and ‘Bagpipe Blues’ especially.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn Pomegranate there are also plenty of new experiments and guests introduced. ‘Koalas’, for example, features the spellbinding whistling of Molly Lewis, lending a bittersweet Morricone-esque charm. ‘Crown Shy’ features soaring strings (arranged by Ninni and played by Joe Butler), and ‘Bagpipe Blues’ and ‘Charlie Potato’ are elevated by Kira Krempova’s ethereal flute playing – the latter also accompanied with Wurlitzer piano played by Oscar ‘SHOLTO’ Robertson.
