Their 2006 debut had introduced a band steeped in drone, garage rock, Vietnam-era paranoia, feedback, and occult atmosphere. Directions to See a Ghost takes that same foundation and pushes it outward, creating a record that feels less like a set of songs and more like a dark psychedelic environment: heavy, ritualistic, feverish, and deliberately consuming.

The Black Angels emerged from Austin, Texas, with a sound that treated psychedelia not as colourful nostalgia, but as threat, trance, and political unease. Their name, drawn from The Velvet Underground’s “The Black Angel’s Death Song,” signalled a connection to drone, repetition, and underground danger from the beginning. On Directions to See a Ghost, those qualities are intensified. The album is slower to reveal itself than Passover, but its power lies in that patience. It builds through accumulation: riffs repeat, organs swell, percussion locks into ritual patterns, and Alex Maas’ voice drifts through the haze like a warning.

The album’s title is perfect for the music. Directions to See a Ghost suggests a ritual, a map, or an instruction manual for entering a haunted state. The record often feels like it is guiding the listener toward something hidden rather than presenting itself directly. Its ghosts are musical, historical, political, and emotional: the ghosts of 1960s psychedelia, the ghosts of war, the ghosts of lost countercultures, and the ghosts that gather inside repetition and echo. The album does not chase clarity. It invites immersion.

Compared with Passover, the production is thicker, more expansive, and more enveloping. The guitars are heavy with tremolo, fuzz, and drone; the organ and keyboards create a dense, spectral atmosphere; the drums often move with a slow, marching insistence; and the vocals are buried just enough to feel like part of the overall fog. The Black Angels understand that psychedelic music depends on space and pressure as much as melody. Here, sound becomes weather: dark, dusty, and full of electricity.

“Bad Vibrations” opens the album with a title that reverses the peace-and-love clichés often attached to psychedelia. The mood is immediately tense and ominous, built around repetition, echo, and the sense of something unstable moving beneath the surface. It functions as a statement of intent: this is psychedelic rock as disturbance, not escape. The band are not offering a trip into brightness, but a descent into shadow.

“Doves” and “Science Killer” deepen the record’s atmosphere of suspicion and dread. The latter is one of the album’s key tracks, with its insistent rhythm, dark vocal delivery, and sense of modern paranoia. The Black Angels often sound as if they are channelling the anxieties of one era through the equipment of another: 1960s-style psych and garage textures carrying twenty-first-century fear, war fatigue, and social unease. That tension gives the album much of its force.

“Mission District” and “You on the Run” bring a more direct garage-psych charge, showing that the band’s extended, droning approach can still produce immediate hooks and forward movement. “You on the Run” in particular became one of the album’s standout tracks, with its urgent pulse and haunted vocal atmosphere capturing the band’s gift for making pursuit, paranoia, and desire feel like the same thing. The song is concise by the album’s standards, but it still carries the record’s thick, spectral weight.

The album’s longer pieces are central to its identity. Tracks such as “18 Years,” “Deer-Ree-Shee,” and “Never/Ever” stretch the band’s sound into more patient and hypnotic forms. These songs are less concerned with conventional rock dynamics than with mood, trance, and endurance. Riffs circle, textures deepen, and small shifts become significant. The music asks the listener to give in to repetition rather than wait for obvious release. That is where much of the album’s psychedelic power lies.

“Deer-Ree-Shee” is especially important to the record’s sense of ritual. Its title and structure suggest incantation, and the music moves like a ceremony unfolding in slow motion. The Black Angels’ version of psychedelia is often spiritual in a dark, ambiguous sense. It does not offer easy transcendence. Instead, it suggests that altered states can reveal fear, memory, and buried violence as much as beauty.

Alex Maas’ vocal presence remains one of the band’s defining elements. His voice is distant, nasal, ghostly, and often heavily reverbed, giving the songs a sense of transmission rather than performance. He does not dominate the music in a traditional frontman role; he haunts it. The lyrics are full of war, death, ghosts, pursuit, love, danger, and psychic disturbance, but they often function as fragments inside the larger atmosphere. The voice becomes another instrument in the drone.

The guitars are equally crucial. Christian Bland and the band use fuzz, tremolo, feedback, and simple repeated figures to create a sound that is heavy without relying on metal’s density or classic rock’s soloing. The guitar is not primarily a vehicle for virtuosity; it is a tool for hypnosis. This connects The Black Angels to The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and the long history of minimal psychedelic rock where one chord, if held long enough, can become a world.

The rhythm section gives the album its physical weight. Many tracks move with a pounding, almost martial quality, reinforcing the group’s fascination with war imagery and ritual movement. Stephanie Bailey’s drumming is steady, forceful, and patient, giving the long songs a centre while allowing the atmosphere to expand. The result is music that feels both grounded and hallucinatory — a body moving through fog.

In the context of the late-2000s psych revival, Directions to See a Ghost was a major statement. It helped establish The Black Angels not simply as a promising modern psychedelic band, but as one of the movement’s central acts. Their role in Austin’s psych scene, and later their association with Levitation / Austin Psych Fest, helped shape a wider international network of bands, labels, festivals, and listeners interested in heavy drone, garage psych, and analogue darkness.

In The Black Angels’ discography, Directions to See a Ghost is the great expansion after the debut. Passover is more compact and immediate, while later albums such as Phosphene Dream and Indigo Meadow would bring sharper songwriting, brighter colours, and more varied production. But Directions to See a Ghost remains one of the band’s most immersive records: long, deep, shadowed, and completely committed to the trance.

The album’s artwork reinforces its haunted, ritualistic character. Its stark monochrome imagery and occult-psych visual language match the music’s sense of darkness, repetition, and altered perception. Like the best modern psych sleeves, it feels less like a simple cover image than an entry point into a wider atmosphere. The visual world and the sound world are tightly connected: black-and-white, distorted, symbolic, and mysterious.

For collectors, Directions to See a Ghost is essential. It is one of the key records of the 2000s neo-psychedelic revival, an important The Black Angels release, and a major title for anyone interested in drone rock, garage psych, modern acid rock, or the darker continuation of 1960s psychedelic traditions. Original Light in the Attic pressings, later vinyl editions, coloured variants, CD versions, and related singles all carry strong interest because the album captures the band at one of their most immersive and uncompromising moments.

More than a decade after its release, Directions to See a Ghost still sounds dense and powerful. “Bad Vibrations” still opens the record with ominous force. “You on the Run” still moves with haunted urgency. “Science Killer” still feels like modern paranoia filtered through vintage equipment. “Deer-Ree-Shee” still pulls the listener into ritual repetition. The album belongs to the 2000s psych revival, but its atmosphere feels older, darker, and more timeless than that label alone suggests.

Directions to See a Ghost is The Black Angels at their most expansive and hypnotic: a record where drone, garage rock, war-haunted imagery, tremolo guitar, ghostly vocals, and ritual repetition become one immersive psychedelic world. From the opening unease of “Bad Vibrations” to the album’s deeper passages of echo, fog, and trance, it remains one of the essential modern psych albums — dark, heavy, immersive, haunted, and absolutely essential.

Key highlights

Artist: The Black Angels

Title: Directions to See a Ghost

Originally released: 2008

Label: Light in the Attic

Producer: The Black Angels

Key tracks: “Bad Vibrations,” “Doves,” “Science Killer,” “Mission District,” “You on the Run,” “18 Years,” “Deer-Ree-Shee,” “Never/Ever”

Hot on the heels of their sold out 10” “Love Is All There Is”, on GPS’s sister label Deep Distance, comes this Very Limited “Transparent With Red Splatter” Vinyl Album housed in a beautiful and unique sleeve.
Wrong Way Records is a new label, vinyl is their passion.

“The group’s first album floats, shimmers and pulsates through a series of landscapes....” Kris Needs Shindig 4/5

“...and the ear-blasting aural kaleidoscope that is “Guru Lover”. Just hours before, at a family dinner, his father had collapsed in front of him and had to be rushed to the hospital. That night Morby still felt the shock and fear lodged in his bones. So he gazed at the images until one of the pictures jumped out at him: his father as a young man, proud and strong and filled with confidence, posing on a lawn with his shirt off.

This was in January of 2020. As the months went on and the world dramatically changed around him, Morby felt an eerie similarity between his feelings of that night and the atmosphere of those spring days. Fear, anxiety, hope and resilience all churning together. The themes began twisting in his mind. History, trauma and the grand fight against time. Having the courage to dream, even while knowing the tragedy that often awaits those who dare to dream.

While his father regained his strength, Morby meditated on these ideas. And then, he headed to Memphis. He moved into the Peabody Hotel and spent his days paying tribute and genuflecting to the dreamers he admired. In the evening, he would return to his room and document his ideas on a makeshift recording set-up, with just his guitar and a microphone. The songs, elegiac in nature, befitting all he had seen, poured out of him.

Produced by Sam Cohen (who also worked on Morby’s Singing Saw and Oh My God), This Is A Photograph features musical contributions from longtime staples of Morby’s live band, as well as old friends and new collaborators alike. If Oh My God saw Morby getting celestial and in constant motion and Sundowner was a study in localized intent, This Is A Photograph finds Morby making an Americana paean, a visceral life and death, blood on the canvas outpouring. As Morby reminds us early on, time is undefeated. So what do we do while we’re still here? The Early Years resurface after another lengthy hiatus and reframe ‘LGOC’ as a divine astral jazz / krautrock crossover, while Richard Pike (of PVT and Deep Learning, among others) turns ‘Blue Comet’ into a glitchy and discordant soundtrack to the best 1980s computer game you never played. “It’s lovely to hear three different interpretations of songs that we already tend to keep quite loose and elastic,“ says Matthew Benn. “These remixes feel like a natural extension of the music on the album, like they're from the same world, but perhaps in a different language.”

Black & Red double LP

---------

One year after the release of their studio album ‘Pink Color Surgery’, The
Psychotic Monks return to us more assertive than ever with ‘Talking
Through Repetition’. In assembling cohorts to turn these visceral jams into something to shake rafters and rattle pint-glasses, new frontiers of ornery intensity have made themselves manifest, and such is the form of the monstrous Bear Bites Horse Sessions, a live-in-the-studio document recorded with Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse studio in Haggerston, London, chronicling a band breathing life into a Stoogian paradigm, and doing so apparently whilst barely breaking a sweat. Taking essential elixirs of in-the-red mania, hypnotic repetition and deathless swagger, these twelve jams walk a crooked path that neighbours the nihilistic vortex of Loop, the saturnine lurch of The Fall and the deadpan derangement of The Heads but remains possessed of a maverick charisma and mischief all its own. Their sound is so full of possibilities, violence, sexuality, sacrifice, even religion. If there was a future to look forward to for heavy guitar music, this is it’ The Quietus The locals call it Sop Ruak – eighty thousand square miles of mountains and mystery and unholy medicine. “It really is an endless seam of activity,” Sex Swing frontman Dan Chandler explains of Golden Triangle – both the title of their new album and the region between Myanmar, Thailand and Laos that inspired it. To know this contradictory corner of the world is to understand fully why the cult-beloved noise-rock artisans turned to it when writing their hotly-anticipated third full-length. The real-life Golden Triangle is a groundswell of both natural wonder and drug production, and who combines beauty and narcotic brutality better than Sex Swing? For a decade now, this

collective of revered UK underground musicians, comprising members of Earth, Mugstar, The Keep and Jaaw, have been pulling audiences into drug- like slipstreams with their alchemy of pummelling rhythms, towering guitars, and unrelenting saxophone through which glimmers of light occasionally pierce through. No wonder their Golden Triangle is an album telling distortion-shrouded tales from one of the most storied, enigmatic places on the planet, with enough invention within to fill eighty thousand miles and more.

Where does this violent, hypnotic aural travelogue take you within the Sop Ruak? The seven tracks that make up The Golden Triangle see the band – completed by bassist Jason Stoll, drummer Stuart Bell, guitarist Jodie Cox, synthesist/guitarist Oli Knowles and saxophonist Colin Webster – adventure first to ‘The Confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers,’ full of shimmering orchestration and feather-light ambience. Then come stops in ‘Myawaddy’, named after a small town embroiled in bloodshed on the border of Myanmar and Thailand, and ‘Boten, Route 13’ – sparked by stories of a seemingly endless stretch of road from Laos into China. Before long, listeners are plunged into ‘Hpakant’, one of the album’s most invigorating and singular moments, lyrically inspired by a jade mine in Myanmar, where the spoils of forced labour are exchanged for prostitution and methanphetamine. The result is a mesmerising slow-burn of sax, snaking rhythms and sinister spoken word courtesy of the Scottish-born Bruce McClure, who “took the theme and turned it into a sci-fi story of exploitation and vice,” explains the frontman. It’s a track that, like the rest of Golden Triangle, underlines the evolution Sex Swing have undertaken since forming in 2014. From the raw and primitive sounds of the self-titled debut full-length, followed up by the coruscatingType II in 2020. Sex Swing’s third effort retains those early primitive elements and adds layers of structure and complexity. Golden Triangle initial formation was that of programmed beats and bedroom recordings shared electronically in the height of the pandemic. Those ideas were then completed during intensive writing sessions at a secluded farm in Oxfordshire.

Album credits consist of recording by Stanley Gravett at Holy Mountain Studios in Hackney, mixing by Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse, mastering from James Plotkin, and the continued aesthetic collaboration with artist Alex Bunn. Golden Triangle bristles with a rawness familiar to fans of the British sonic punishers, but adds new elements indicative of a group never resting on their laurels or sitting in one place. Why would they, after all? There’s an entire world of mountains and mystery and unholy medicine out there to be explored. Buzzy synths take the forefront, driving relentless rhythms that crack and pop, drenched in a chemically saturated sheen—part bug eyed speed-freak pogo, part dance floor delirium. LP number four, Very Human Features, arrives hot on the heels of the band’s first Sub Pop release, 2024’s On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System. That record saw the band continue their love affair with BBC Radio 6, start up a new one with KEXP thanks to a session with them, and crop up in the pages of the NME. Anything else from the bucket list? Oh yeah, festival slots including packing home ground Green Man’s Walled Garden to its non-existent rafters. Then shows across the US in those venues us Brits tend to only hear about.

This record - a new batch of typically playful, riff-laden, smart Bug Club tunes - gives the band an excuse to continue their never-ending tour and feed their baying fans, engorged and expectant thanks to this band’s relentless record-releasing hot streak. “Have you ever been to Wales?”, asks the band in the album’s lead single, “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales.” If not, why not? It’s good. A new, discordant national anthem, if they didn’t already have a decent harmonious one. Oh, to be from a country where national pride is something other than the mark of a tosser. Starting as a classic, chugging chantalong, it’s interrupted by what sounds like an alien choir before they let rip. Think Dinosaur Jr. with a job at the tourist board. And Welsh. Definitely Welsh. On Very Human Features The Bug Club have continued in their habit of presenting as a collective mind. Two-in-one. Rarely do you find a band with two creative forces that have such a singular, shared perspective, sense of humour and knack for a pop melody. In “Beep Boop Computers” vocalists Sam (also on guitar) and Tilly (on bass) swap between “I”s, “my”s and “we”s as if there isn’t any difference between the lot, all the while skewering interpersonal relationships and experiences in a glorious, glam rock dismantling of the human aspects the album’s title references. Staying on topic, “How to Be a Confidante” does that-thing-The-Bug-Club-really-know-how-to-do where they, again speaking as two voices from the same mind, pluck out common aspects of how we all live and make them sound ridiculous. The surreal is in the familiar, not in ignoring the familiar - The Bug Club know this and that understanding joins an unrelenting bassline in forming the backbone of this garage rock-infused belter. Having gained an appropriately beefed-up stateside following thanks to the beefy slab of garage-punk on On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System, and the band’s subsequent US tour, The Bug Club’s fruitful partnership with Sup Pop gets even tastier with Very Human Features. An assured and endlessly witty whirlwind of literary, self-referential, good-humoured rock ‘n’ roll, the new record sees the band riding their ever-swelling wave of popularity as if it’s a quick whizz around the Caldicot Aldi carpark on a pair of rollerskates. Less a metaphysical journey into inner space, more a physical journey into the ground itself, converging with its roots and vibrations. Forged from repetition and mantric intensity and possessed of formidable psychic fortitude, Songs from the Free House - their fifth release for Rocket Recordings - proves that the only retro-chic Smote indulge in is liable to go back several centuries. The megalithic monomania of last year's A Grand Stream set a formidable precedent, and Smote's live shows in its wake have gradually built a reputation as visionary seers building audial monuments by cranked amplification and atmospheric intensity alike. And in fact, following a medical emergency in 2024 when Oberst was battling vocal problems—it was the first thing he wanted to sing after his illness, once he was able to use his voice again. “This was the song I felt like singing,” says Oberst, “I’ve just always loved it.” It was a last-minute addition to the EP that ultimately ties it all together, its cautious optimism offering a glimmer of light in the shadows of the collection, the shadows of a fraying American dream, and the shadows cast across a family dinner at the kids table.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0892/6734/files/brighteyes.kids.cover.DOC3853000__1_2e04a277-ab3e-4834-8b3c-7a5859c8e800.jpg?v=1756307682
melodys-echo-chamber-unclouded
Melody's Echo Chamber - Unclouded

Indies Only. Charlie Byrd's album The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd drops like a perfectly timed rimshot, ready to remind everyone that jazz can be sophisticated, soulful, and swing like nobody's business.

It was at Edgewood Studios in Washington, D.C. where Byrd, the Virgina-born guitar wizard, with his trusty unamplified Spanish guitar, plied his magic. Recorded in 1960 and released in 1963 on Riverside Records (after a limited run as Charlie's Choice: Jazz at the Showboat, Vol. 4 on Washington Records' Offbeat imprint), this album is Byrd at his peak, blending jazz's improvisational fire with the refined finesse of classical technique. The tracklist reads like a love letter to versatility: from the peppy "Taking a Chance on Love" to the dreamy "Moonlight in Vermont," and a nod to his idol Django Reinhardt with "Nuages." Oh, and let's not forget "Django," a solo guitar performance that's so intimate, you'll swear Byrd's playing it just for you in your living room.

The album's vibe is like a martini — smooth, sophisticated, but with a kick that sneaks up on you. On bass, we have Keter Betts, whose steady, soulful lines are the heartbeat of the trio. Betts, a D.C. jazz staple, keeps things grounded while Byrd's guitar soars. On drums, Buddy Deppenschmidt lays down rhythms so tasteful, you'd think he's seasoning the tracks with pixie dust. Together, they're tighter than a hipster's skinny jeans, creating a sound that's both relaxed and razor-sharp. And that solo "Django"? That's all Byrd, baby — proof he could hold court without a rhythm section and still leave you gobsmacked.

The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd didn't top the Billboard charts like Byrd's later bossa nova blockbuster Jazz Samba (1962, with Stan Getz), but it was a sleeper hit in jazz circles. Its initial limited release on Washington Records meant it was like finding a rare Pokémon card for early collectors. When Riverside picked it up in '63, it rode the wave of Byrd's growing fame, especially after he introduced bossa nova to North America. Jazz fans, already smitten with Byrd's genre-hopping genius, snapped it up, and it became a staple in collections for its pure, unadulterated guitar artistry.

This reissue brims with superior quality. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. The rest is White Fence magik at its most dark, as Tim's restless free-allusivation trippifyingly transforms the cramped confines of heart wracked self-excoriation right before our eyes and ears! In pop songs.

On (the mixing) board with White Fence/on the (drum) kit with Tim is Ty Segall (also producer of For the Recently Found Innocent, the last solo White Fence album). Engineering tactics fully hand-in-glove with the White Fence intent, they produce a clean and uncrowded space to mount up all the rock ‘n balladry, their clean lines surrounded by an emphatic/unalterable (minimalist) frame. These are hits! All of ‘em gleaming with clean electricity, and white (sometimes black-and-blue-eyed) soul. Hard water and power held in stylish reserve: “Your Eyes,” “Given Up My Heart,” “Unread Books,” “Evaporating Love” number among the many highlights.

Tim’s lyric sets and chord progressions, with their perspectives, time codes and smash cuts, give up eleven fleeting glimpses from the other side of the 'Fence, each outfitted as foot-forward pop tunes for maximum rock ‘n roll. On the “title” tune, “I Came Close, Orange For Luck,” the lyrics’ dire implication, blurred sumptuously by Tim’s eerie falsetto, twist strands of dread into the sunshiny college rock, sharing sum space with old schoolboys, The Smiths, while straying, an outcast of its own kind. Or the Lennon vibes of "Unread Books," operating through carefully twisted Presley wires. Production polarities on point! Playing with genre throughout the album like a space-age Kinks, Tim’s natty wordplay splatters against the songs' rock-solid edifice, spilling an infinitum of cracked, shaggy realities, billowing, mirrored, sharded. When it all moves, you move, and that’s fun, so long as you savor the deep impact of a couplet from “I Wanted a Rolex”:

Limited Edition Blue Vinyl.

--------------

Iguana Death Cult sharpen their sound and focus on Guns Out, a punchy return to the band’s garage-punk foundations that balances raw energy with hard-won self-reflection.
