The Vacant Lots release new single & video 'Thank You'

The Vacant Lots release new single & video 'Thank You'. New album 'Closure' out September 30 via Fuzz Club.

Following premieres on Iggy Pop’s BBC 6 Music show and Flood Magazine, Brooklyn post-punk/synth-pop duo The Vacant Lots are releasing their new single and video ‘Thank You’ today. You can stream/watch the new single below and pre-order the LP here.

Arriving following recent single ‘Chase’, the new track is the second to be lifted from The Vacant Lots’ incoming ‘Closure’ LP, out September 30 on Fuzz Club. In support of the new album, the duo will tour North America with The Black Angels in September/October and UK/Europe in November/December.

Disco on downers dance beats lashed with gutter-rock guitar riffs underpin new single ‘Thank You’, with evocatively concise and lacerating lyrics (“Thank you for wasting my time”, “Thank you for fucking up my life”) delivered detached and deadpan. Jared Artaud says of the track: "When it's over it's a lot easier to look back and see things for what it is. To look back and see the duality of love and hate in a relationship. Sometimes it's a lot more devastating losing the time you had than the person you thought you loved. Nothing is worse than wasting your time."

Brian MacFadyen adds: "Thank You was built in the framework of simplicity. It has a relentless pace driven by an angular arpeggiated bassline and drum machine pattern. A Juno-6 was used for chords throughout, a Korg M500 for the leads, and the track is brought to another level with guitars layered on top. The process of crafting this song was done entirely remotely due to the pandemic and the layers over time became more and more refined until we were satisfied with each sound source."

Created under isolation, ‘Closure’ is The Vacant Lots’ most fully realized work to date. It arrives following their highly-praised 2020 album ‘Interzone’, Cold Cave remix 7” and Artaud’s recent work co-curating the ‘Vega Vault’ of unreleased Suicide/Alan Vega material (culminating in Artaud co-producing and mixing 2021’s lost Vega album, ‘Mutator’).

Set against a pulsating backdrop of modern apocalypse, the duo’s fourth album packs 8 minimal-is-maximal salvos into 23 minutes that coalesce into a stun-blast soundtrack for today’s shattered society. Artaud recalls: “During the pandemic the two of us were totally isolated in our home studios. I don't think the pandemic directly influenced the songs in an obvious way, but merely amplified existing feelings of alienation and isolation. We found ourselves writing in a more direct and vulnerable way than ever before.”
