Black Doldrums announce their new album 'Repetition Compulsion' and share the lead single 'Repetition' The third full-length from the London based gothic post-punk trio arrives November 13th and you can stream the first single and pre-order the limited edition vinyl / CD here
The newly-announced ‘Repetition Compulsion’ completes Black Doldrums’ interconnected “State of Mind Trilogy”: a three-album exploration of the psychological forces that shape identity, memory and human connection, which began with their 2022 debut, ‘Dead Awake’, and most recently, 2024’s ‘In Limerence’. Out everywhere today, ‘Repetition’ is a hypnotic, emotionally charged first cut exploring the unconscious cycles we repeat in love and life – a central theme on this record, which they band say looks deep at "the unconscious tendency to recreate familiar emotional patterns, destructive behaviours and inherited cycles from the past.”
Expanding on the single, Kevin Gibbard says: “The song came from an idea to challenge ourselves to write something around one riff and something dirge-like. It also fit the theme of the album and the topic of repetition by literally experimenting with repetition in the musical sense. The opening line – “is your mind split in two” – is something taken from our conversations on our many long walks around London where Sophie [Landers] was talking about the psychological term splitting. It seemed to fit the feel of the song and theme of the album so much so it now opens up both the album and our live shows..."
Drawing inspiration from 80s gothic post-punk, synth-pop and darkwave, alongside the atmospheric film scores of John Carpenter and Vangelis, 'Repetition Compulsion' builds on emotional and sonic foundations of these influences to create something cinematic, modern and unmistakably their own.
'Repetition Compulsion' is available to pre-order now on 180g neon yellow vinyl (limited to /350 hand-numbered copies), 180g ultra clear vinyl and CD. The neon yellow edition is included in the Fuzz Club Membership with an exclusive Members-only signed photo print and hand-stamped liner notes.
