'Not Even Jesus' is taken from The Third Sound new 'First Light' LP, out August 27 on Fuzz Club
The Third Sound are today releasing a new video for ‘Not Even Jesus’, lifted from the ‘First Light’ LP which was released on Fuzz Club Records last month. Led by The Brian Jonestown Massacre guitarist Hákon Aðalsteinsson, The Third Sound are a Berlin-based band that deal in a hypnotic blend of neo-psychedelia, post-punk and new wave. Dealing in a sparse, acoustic-driven gothic-psychedelia, you can stream the video for ‘Not Even Jesus’ below (directed by Hakon’s girlfriend, the photographer and film-maker Lilly Creightmore). In support of the newly-released album, The Third Sound will be touring mainland Europe in September/October this year.
Talking about the video, Lilly said: “On hearing 'Not Even Jesus' for the first time it implanted itself deep inside my brain and not long after apparitions of daily mundanity flickered into view, soundtracked by this simple but incredibly catchy song. Hákon and I dreamt up scenes over our kitchen table during the Winter lockdown. As many of the Third Sound's videos already have a strong Berlin vibe about them, we wanted to go for something different with this one and decided it had to have a very English feel, perhaps because it is where I am from and also because of current political affairs, but we also set out to make it a humorous take on the gritty day to day of humanity rather than make a bleak or heavy political statement. I cast a few friends and family for the video and the rest is captured in true documentary style mostly in England over the Summer, but with a nod to Iceland and Colombia where we have also spent time this year.”
On how the ‘Not Even Jesus’ single was born, Hakon said: “I was in a taxi on my way home when a song I liked came on the radio. The lyrics were only one or 2 lines repeated over and over again but still it had a depth and build up that worked completely. When I got home I wrote and fully demoed this song in a few hours. The final version is not that different from the original demo.”
The follow-up to 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’ LP, ‘First Light’ album marks an evolution into a brighter and at times uplifting sound. Marrying moments of light and dark, the result is the band’s most dynamic full-length to date: “This album is definitely less gloomy than the previous one, although some ghosts from the past are lurking in the background. We always try to make something new on each album and never make the same album over again, but this feels like an even bigger change than usual, especially regarding the mood. Something new is beginning although the past is not forgotten. I think the title, First Light, describes the overall feel of the record pretty well.”
‘First Light’ is the fifth full-length from The Third Sound and arrives off the back of 2018’s ‘All Tomorrow’s Shadows’, 2016’s ‘Gospels of Degeneration’, 2013’s ‘The Third Sound of Destruction and Creation’ and their 2011 self-titled debut which was released on Anton Newcombe’s A Recordings. With Hakon Aðalsteinsson leading the group on vocals and guitar, the rest of the band is comprised of Robin Hughes (Guitar / Organ), Fred Sunesen (Drums) and Andreas Miranda (Bass). With a number of European tours in tow, the band have previously shared the stage with the likes of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Warlocks, Singapore Sling, Crocodiles, Clinic, Tess Parks and more. In September/October this year the band will set off on a European tour in support of ‘First Light’ – the list of dates can be found below.
