The word Tystnad literally translates as silence. Here, the silence refers not to Zen Buddhism or John Cage, but to Silence Studios, where Flowers Must Die - carriers of the torch of Swedish psychedelia for nearly 20 years - retreated to make their most head-expanding album to date. Located near the Norwegian border in the rural Värmland region, the residential studio has been a countercultural hub for decades, giving bands space to stretch out creatively and focus their energies.

From those surroundings, Flowers Must Die have crafted a collection of expansive, incandescent jams that charts a lysergic course between the anything-goes energy of early 1970s psychedelia and the 21st century. Tystnad follows their 2017 Rocket release Kompost, bringing wild free improvisation together with haunting melody.

If, as the band claim, Tystnad is their last recording made together in one room at the same time, it captures a formidable sense of momentum. The album draws on a Swedish psychedelic continuum while pushing beyond genre.
